Melanoma Rates Skyrocket 27% in US: Protect Your Skin!

United States: The reports by the American Cancer Society, Melanoma, the deadliest of skin cancer incidences, has been raised by 27 percent in the past ten years.

More about the finding

According to the reports, Melanoma affects almost a hundred thousand Americans per year, and more than eight thousand lose their lives, which is almost twice as many men as women succumbing to the disease.

As per AARP, the ones who are old do experience decades of skin exposure and are specifically vulnerable to this potentially deadly disease. However, if caught early, the chances of getting cured are highly likely, as newsmax.com reported.

More than 90 percent of the nonmelanoma cancers and 85 percent of the melanoma cases are linked to ultraviolet (UV) radiation exposure coming from the sun.

As per the guidelines issued by the American Cancer Society, avoiding direct exposure to the sun as much as possible is the first step to avoiding cancer’s occurrence in the body.

The society also suggests vigilance of apparent changes in the skin and performing a monthly skin self-exam.

According to Dr. Elizabeth Buchbinder, an oncologist at the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, “Melanoma is a rule breaker,” as newsmax.com reported.

She added that little moles could also cause major trouble where such sport grow speedily, “And so, knowing what to look for is super important.”

Here are four warning signs to watch for:

  • The “ugly duckling.” Buchbinder mentions that those with a lot of moles are at greater risk of Melanoma, yet there is no need to panic. She said, “If you have a bunch of dark moles, but you have 50 of them, they’re not all melanomas,” and, “But if you have one mole that really looks different, and it’s kind of the ugly duckling, that’s the one that you should really want to get looked at and checked.”

  • “Where the sun doesn’t shine.” As per the experts, in most cases, melanomas are caused by UV light, but some aren’t. Therefore, it is suggested that the soles of the feet and palms be looked for for dark streaks, which could be a sign of Melanoma. Buchbinder also added that she has also encountered a rare case of Melanoma in which the cancer was developed in the eyes.
  • Red, white, and blue hues. Dr. Robert Brodell, who is the chair of the Department of Dermatology at the University of Mississippi, said to AARP that not all melanomas are dark-brown moles. In some cases, the spots have a blue tint, and others may also appear red, which is the result of an immune response. Brodell said, “The body is attacking it. It knows it’s abnormal, and it’s trying to defend itself, so you get inflammation.”
  • Itchy or bleeding spots. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, any apparent change in size, shape, color, or elevation of a spot on your skin or the production of new symptoms in it, which might include bleeding, itching, or crusting, may be a warning sign of Melanoma.
