Mpox Vaccine Now Essential for Travelers, CDC Sounds Alarm

United States: The CDC has released a health advisory that advises that anyone who is planning to travel to certain countries where a particular type of mpox is prevalent must get a complete immunization before they travel.

The agency has already been advising vaccination for those intending to travel to countries where clade I mpox is prevalent.

CDC’s issued guidelines

This week’s CDC guidance specifically advised that those who “anticipate certain sexual exposures” while being in those countries should receive the complete two-dose regimen of the Jynneos smallpox vaccine.

About Mpox

Mpox is subclassed into two main strains, or clades, which are clade I and clade II. Specifically, it is important to determine which lineage of Mpox emerged from clade II and Mpox that infected Western non-endemic countries in 2022 is less lethal than those of clade I, the Hill reported.

According to the CDC guidance, travelers should consult with their providers on immunization if they are planning to go to a country where clade I mpox is present and expect to have any of the following: having sex with a new partner, having sex at a commercial venue, engaged in sex for money or other products; and having sex during mass events.

Those African nations where clade I mpox is dominant have been experiencing an outbreak that started in 2023. As the CDC stated, the western area of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and non-endemic neighboring countries such as Burundi, Rwanda, and Uganda have not been spared.

The current epidemic has been associated with more than 27,000 probable infections and over 1,300 fatalities.

Signs of Mpox infection

Mpox primary transmission is via direct physical contact with the affected persons. The signs of mpox resemble symptoms of the flu, with the patient presenting with fever, chills, muscle aches, and swollen lymph nodes.

The other symptoms are the rashes that will appear as painful sores that weep and form scabs.

Pulled-out cases of clade I mpox have been confirmed in countries other than Africa, such as Sweden and Thailand. The WHO announced it as a global health emergency last month.

Recently, the White House announced its plan to donate one million doses of mpox vaccines and USD five hundred million in aid in order to support African countries struggling to respond to the outbreak.

According to President Biden, “Now we face the mpox outbreak in Central and Eastern Africa. Mpox is different from COVID-19. But we will act quickly — and bring partners with us,” the Hill reported.

“We are prepared to commit at least $500 million — to support African countries to prevent and respond to mpox and donate up to one million doses of mpox vaccines,” he added.
